When is World Cat Day 2026?

It’s World Cat Day February 17 and every year it gains more and more supporters. This is a day to remind us of the unique bond between humans and cats – an animal that is often charming, independent and mysterious at the same time. The holiday emphasizes the joy of being with a cat, but also sensitivity to their needs and problems, such as homelessness or responsible care of animals.

In practice, February 17 is an opportunity to devote more attention to your pet, spend time with it and – perhaps – take care of those who are still waiting for a home. Shelters and animal organizations often organize adoption campaigns and educational events on this day to encourage conscious care of cats.

Where did the holiday come from? The history of Cat Day

The origins of World Cat Day, celebrated on February 17, date back to Italy, where this holiday was initiated in 1990. The originator of the idea was the Italian journalist Claudia Angeletti, who asked readers in the “Tuttogatto” magazine to choose the appropriate date. The choice of February 17 was not accidental – February is the month of the zodiac sign of Aquarius, and people of this sign, like cats, are independent. Additionally, the number 17 is both mysterious and unlucky for Italians, which was supposed to refer to the mysterious nature of cats.

In Poland, the celebration of Cat Day was initiated on February 17 in 2006 Wojciech Albert Kurkowskifelinologist and editor-in-chief of the monthly “KOT”. His initiative was aimed at promoting help for homeless cats under the slogan “Pedigrees – to domestic cats”.

Cat Day in the world – several dates and customs

There is also International Cat Day, which falls on August 8. It was established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to promote responsible cat ownership worldwide.

In Japan, Cat Day falls on February 22, which refers to the cat’s meowing “nyan nyan nyan”. On this day, many people decorate their cats, share photos on social media and organize local events. In Russia, Cat Day is celebrated on March 1 – often with events promoting the diversity of cat breeds and presentations on animal care.

How can you celebrate Cat Day?

There are many ways to celebrate Cat Day, whether you have your own pet or you just love these animals:

  • Pamper your cat: Treat him to a new toy, a favorite treat, or maybe some extra caressing and fun.
  • Support local shelters: Cat Day is a perfect time to support organizations that help homeless cats. You can make a donation, donate food or accessories, or even volunteer.
  • Consider adopting: If you are thinking about adding a furry member to your family, visit your local shelter. Many cats are waiting for a loving home there.
  • Educate others: Share information about responsible cat care and promoting adoption.
  • Share your love for cats on social media: Post a photo of your cat using hashtags like #CatDay or #IloveCats.

However you choose to celebrate, Cat Day is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate these amazing creatures that enrich our lives.
