His ex-wife died at the scene of the shooting, the son succumbed to his injuries later in the hospital. Three other injured people are in critical condition. These are the ex-wife’s parents and their family friend, the police said. The family wanted to watch a high school hockey game in the sports hall on Monday local time.
The motive of the perpetrator was not immediately known. Police previously said that in the case, he interviews hundreds of witnesses and evaluates the video material. The incident was part of a “national crisis in gun violence,” Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said. Police asked people not to share videos of the incident on social media. The match was broadcast live.
The police identified the shooter as 56-year-old Robert Dorgan, the AP agency writes. The victims are his ex-wife Rhonda and adult son Aidan. Dorgan was also known by the names Roberto Esposito and Roberto Dorgano, authorities said.
Gender identity was apparently a factor in Dorgan’s wife filing for divorce in 2020 after nearly 30 years of marriage. Court documents show that Rhonda Dorgan originally cited “sex reassignment surgery, narcissistic traits and personality disorders” as reasons for filing, but crossed those out and wrote “irreconcilable differences that have caused an irreparable breakdown of marriage.” Colleagues of the shooter said he had a “bad temper,” adds the AP.
