First day of trilateral peace talks was a "very tense" six hours

According to Rustem Umerov, “the debates focused on practical issues and mechanisms to reach possible solutions”.

The first day of trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the United States, this Tuesday in Geneva, was marked by tension, with the promise of a new round for Wednesday.

The negotiations, with a view to finding a peace solution in Ukraine, took place with a dozen Ukrainian participants, led by former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Russians, headed by presidential advisor Vladímir Medinski, in addition to United States representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Agence France-Presse, citing a source close to the Russian delegation, wrote that today’s negotiations “were very tense” and lasted six hours, behind closed doors, in a hotel in Geneva.

Representatives from Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy were also present in Geneva.

According to Rustem Umerov, “the debates focused on practical issues and mechanisms to reach possible solutions”.

The negotiations in Geneva took place hours after Russia’s armed forces launched a new attack against several regions of Ukraine, using cruise missiles and drones.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, considered this a “massive attack”, “deliberately calculated to cause the greatest possible damage to our energy sector”.

This attack came a week after the fourth anniversary of the start of the invasion launched on February 24, 2022.
