Resignation rumors about ECB boss Lagarde – who could succeed the Frenchwoman

Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), will leave office early, according to a media report. It is expected that she will not complete her regular eight-year term of office, which runs until October 2027, reported Financial Times on Wednesday, citing a person familiar with Lagarde’s thinking. Accordingly, the 70-year-old Frenchwoman has not yet decided on the exact date of her departure. According to the report, she plans to leave her post before the French presidential election scheduled for April 2027. In doing so, she allegedly wants to offer French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz the opportunity to find a new leader for the central bank.
