What iridescent spiders have to do with energy-saving sensors

The colorful courtship dance of male Australian peacock spiders and the blue wings of a grasshopper from Southeast Asia – what at first glance sounds like pure observation of nature could one day lead to new technological solutions. At the University of Salzburg, Anna-Lee Jessop and Limin Wang from Bodo Wilts’ research group are researching how nature creates colors and optical effects. Their goal: to make these mechanisms usable for new materials and sensors.
