German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says he sees little chance of a quick end to the war in Ukraine. According to him, the conflict will end only when military or economic resources are exhausted. TASR informs about it based on Thursday’s AFP report.
- According to him, the conflict will end only when one of the parties is exhausted.
- According to Merz, Putin will not be convinced by reasonable or humanitarian arguments.
- Negotiations on a ceasefire in Geneva between Ukraine and Russia did not bring an agreement.
“In my estimation, only the exhaustion of one of the two sides, either militarily or economically, will end this war,” Merz told the Rheinpfalz newspaper. “(Russian President Vladimir) Putin will not be convinced by reasonable or humanitarian arguments. That is the bitter truth” he emphasized. Europe must therefore ensure “that Russia will no longer be able to wage war from a military or economic point of view”, he declared.
“(Russia, however) must continue the war because it has no other plan for hundreds of thousands of soldiers, who in many cases return from the front traumatized,” Merz recalled. “Currently, we are witnessing intense barbarism in Russia. This is not going to change in the near future, and we have to put up with it.” clarified the current situation in Moscow.
Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion for almost four years. In the past few days, it has been conducting armistice negotiations with Russia in Geneva, with the mediation of the United States. However, no agreement has yet been reached on the key disputed points, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said according to AFP.
