One of the PT’s main evangelical references, federal deputy Benedita da Silva (RJ) defends the right of the Acadêmicos de Niterói school to have included in its parade a wing criticizing Brazilian conservative families.
“We cannot interfere in the schools’ plot. We already had Christ who had to parade covered, it already happened with Our Lady. The decision has to be made by the board and the community”, he states.
The reference to Christ is to a Beija Flor parade in the 1980s, which talked about poverty. Following a request from the Church, the statue was covered with black plastic.
Benedita says she doesn’t follow parades and that’s why she didn’t see the wing, which characterized the families as “preserved” food.
Several sectors of the PT and the Lula government assessed that it was a mistake for the president to associate himself with the school, and that this could harm the PT member’s relationship with evangelical segments in the election.
