Man breaks law, trains dog to carry garbage and is fined in Italy

Police authorities in Sicily, Italy, have released images of a dog carrying a bag of rubbish to an abandoned site near Catania. The crime? The dog’s owner trained the animal to carry garbage and thus avoid paying the collection fee imposed by the local government.

In the video, the dog carries a large trash bag in its mouth and abandons it on the side of the road. “Inventiveness cannot be an alibi for lack of civility,” said a Facebook post from local authorities.

“This behavior is both cunning and doubly unfair, because, in addition to making the city dirty, it tries to circumvent the rules by exploiting the unsuspecting four-legged friend. Respect for urban decorum and the environment is everyone’s duty.”

The man was identified and fined, according to the publication.

The situation is particularly serious in the southern provinces and Italian islands, where garbage collection is sometimes just 57%, meaning rubbish can sit in skips and bins for days.

The capital, Rome, has the highest rate of garbage tax evasion, according to authorities, followed by Naples.
