Mercosur-EU agreement will be a priority next week due to US uncertainties, says Motta

The president of the Chamber announced that deputy Marcos Pereira, president of his party, will be the rapporteur of the proposal

The President of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), said this Saturday (21) that the Chamber will prioritize next week theapproval of the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. The president of your party, the deputy Marcos Pereira (Republicanos-SP)was announced as rapporteur of the proposal.

“With the uncertainties surrounding the imposition of tariffs by the United States, Brazil is left to fight for predictability in international trade relations. Therefore, we will prioritize voting on the agreement next week”, said Motta in a publication on X.

“I am appointing as rapporteur deputy Marcos Pereira (Republicanos-SP), who was minister of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services and also participated in the construction of this long-awaited treaty for 26 years”, he added.

The government sent the agreement to Congress in early February. The Legislature needs to approve it. Last week, deputy Arlindo Chinaglia (PT-SP), presented leaders and Motta with a report on the agreement made by Mercosur with the European Union.

The text is expected to be voted on in the Brazilian representation of Parliament in Mercosur (Parlasul) on Tuesday, 24th, at 10 am. It must then be taken to the plenary, under the rapporteur of Marcos Pereira, in the form of a draft legislative decree.

In addition to the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, there are other items on the Chamber’s agenda next week: the most importantthe bill with measures to combat criminal factions in the country and the proposal to exempt data centers (program called Redata).
