The president was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident
Agents from the United States Secret Service and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office shot dead this Sunday a man who entered the security perimeter of Mar-a-Lago with “what appeared to be a shotgun and a gallon of fuel”, authorities announced, published on the social network X.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, pending “notification of family members”, the secret services said in the same publication.
“U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department agent confronted the individual and gunfire was exchanged between law enforcement during the confrontation. No Secret Service or Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department agents were injured.”
The president, Donald Trump, was not at Mar-a-Lago during the incident; had spoken on Saturday night at the White House Governors’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from U.S. media.
“The incident, including the individual’s history, actions, possible motivation and use of force, is being investigated by the FBI, US Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department,” authorities said.
In the same statement, it is stated that the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave “pending the outcome of the investigation”, which is a routine police procedure at the agency.
