More than 230 deaths this rainy season: 12 missing, 321 injured, more than 6000 houses completely destroyed, 530,998 animals dead. This Saturday, 13 people were hit by atmospheric discharge.

One atmospheric discharge hit 13 people on Saturday at the administrative post of ChimbunilaMozambican province of Niassanorth of the country, with at least five dead there, mother and children, it was announced this Sunday.

According to a source from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in the province of Niassa, cited by the local media, there is still a record of two seriously injuredtransported to the hospital in Lichinga, in addition to six slightly injuredall caused by atmospheric discharge.

The atmospheric event surprised the local population and, accompanied by heavy rain, caused trees to fall and destruction in that administrative post.

Rainy season, one of the most severe in several years

Before this incident, the total number of deaths in the current rainy season in Mozambique had risen to 230 deadwith a record of almost 863.5 thousand people affected since October, indicated the INGD.

According to information from the INGD database, until early Saturday afternoon 863,433 people were affected in the current rainy season, corresponding to 200,702 familiesthere are also 12 missing e 321 injured. This balance accounts for two more deaths compared to Thursday’s update.

The January floods alone caused at least 27 deaths, affecting 724,131 people, and the passage of Cyclone Gezani in Inhambane, on February 13 and 14, it caused four more deaths, according to updated INGD data on the rainy season.

It should be added that a total of 15,254 houses were partially destroyed, 6,121 completely destroyed and 183,824 floodedin the current rainy season. A total of 272 health facilities, 82 places of worship and 679 schools were affected in just over four and a half months.

INGD data also indicates that 555,040 hectares of agricultural areas were affected during this period, with 288,016 hectares considered lost, affecting 365,784 farmers. Also 530,998 animals diedincluding cattle, goats and poultry, and 7,845 kilometers of road, 36 bridges and 123 aqueducts were affected.

Since October, the Mozambican disaster management institute has activated 149 accommodation centers, which housed 113,478 people, of which 41 are still active, with at least 33,905 people.
