The most curious thing is that the continent was called America due to a mistake by the German cartographer. In 1507 he gave the name America to the lands covered by the Italian Amerigo Vespucci, in the first years of the 16th century. In 1501, traveling along the coast of Pindorama, he was at the mouth of the São Francisco River and Guanabara Bay.
His books were among the best sellers of the time.
On his map, he demarcated a small piece of land in the North, Caribbean islands and, in the South, a continent where he located a dozen geographical features on the coast of the Land of Parrots (one of them illustrates the map), which he named America. Years later, the cartographer regretted it, but it was too late.
Vespucci was a great cascader. His books went through at least 60 editions and sold thousands of copies. The lands he passed through were not an “earthly paradise” and there were no giants or lions there. People didn’t live there for 150 years either, especially because the natives didn’t observe the solar calendar, but the little books described the people of the 16th century merchants’ dreams.
