Avalanche threat in the Tatras: Meteorologists expect up to 30 cm of new snow and strong winds

  • There is an increased avalanche danger in the High and Western Tatras.
  • An increase of 20 to 30 centimeters of new snow is expected.
  • The situation is worsened by strong wind and the presence of weak layers of snow.

In the High and Western Tatras on Tuesday, there is an increased avalanche danger, level three on the five-point international scale. In the Low Tatras and Krivánská Mala Fatra, there is a slight avalanche danger above the forest line. In Lúčanská Mala Fatra, in Veľká Fatra and the eastern part of the Low Tatras, only a small avalanche danger remains. This was reported by the Avalanche Prevention Center (SLP) of the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS).

“We expect an increase of 20 and sometimes up to 30 centimeters of new snow during the day. The snow will fall on less stable layers of older snow, sometimes on hard ground. In addition, there are still weak layers of square-grained snow in the snow cover in northern orientations. Spontaneous avalanches of new snow may also occur, especially on steep slopes and rock walls,” warned the center and at the same time pointed out that the situation will be worsened by the strong northwest wind.

Above 1500 meters above sea level (m above sea level), the snow is dry, blown by the wind and unevenly distributed. The height of the snow cover is still significantly below average, especially in locations up to 1500 m above sea level In the Low Tatras and Krivánská Mala Fatra, smaller spontaneous avalanches from new snow can occur on very steep slopes and rock walls above the 1500 m asl limit
