Heavy rains left at least 20 dead in Minas Gerais’ Zona da Mata

Public calamity
The Government of Minas Gerais confirmed 20 deaths due to heavy rains that hit Juiz de Fora, Ubá and other municipalities in Zona da Mata, on Monday night (23).
Sixteen deaths occurred in Juiz de Fora, and four in the municipality of Ubá. During the early hours of this Tuesday, the mayor of Juiz de Fora, Margarida Salomão (PT-MG), announced that she had decreed state of public calamity. “Anyone who has tried to walk around the city today knows that the neighborhoods are isolated,” said Margarida.
Governor Romeu Zema (Novo) will decree three days of official mourning throughout the state and you should visit the region by the end of this Tuesday or next Wednesday. Vice-governor Mateus Simões (PSD) is also expected to travel to the location, according to a government statement.
In a note, the National Civil Defense stated that it recognized the state of calamity this Tuesday morning of Juiz de Fora and which began relief work and immediate assistance. It also reported that it sent eight experts from the Disaster Support Group (GADE) to accelerate assistance actions.
