Moscow is reinvesting in the nuclear threat narrative on the anniversary of the invasion

It is trying to set up a scene of a nuclear threat on the day of the four-year anniversary of the invasion. It started with a report from the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) that the U.S. is considering moving a “” or even nuclear components to build a “dirty” one to Ukraine in order to strengthen its position at the negotiating table.

Announcement with a bit of “elite”, “defeat” and nuclear doom

According to SVR’s original report “the British and French elites are unwilling to accept defeat” so Kiev could push for better terms in a possible cessation of hostilities if it possessed some nuclear capability “or at least a ‘dirty’ bomb”.

As the relevant announcement stated: “Currently, according to the information available to the Russian SVR, London and Paris are actively working to provide such a weapon to Kiev, as well as the means for its delivery. This includes the covert transfer of relevant European-made components, equipment and technologies to Ukraine. As an option, the French TN-75 compact warhead from the M51.1 submarine-launched ballistic missile is being considered. Germany refused to participate in this dangerous undertaking.”

Group fire from the Russian leadership

The coordination between Russian officials to support this scenario was really impressive, while the subject was mentioned earlier by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, during his speech to the men of the Russian FSB intelligence service.

The issue was first mentioned by the former president and prime minister of Russia and current vice-president of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, and then by Maria Zakharova. Both threatened appropriate consequences should Ukraine obtain nuclear weapons.

Then Putin made a report, who also used these reports to launch new threats against Ukraine and its allies. For his part, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov claimed that he would inform US President Donald Trump about this matter.

The new, old “dirty bomb” and the denials

The issue of the “dirty bomb” is not the first time it has come to the news, as Russian services have been leaking this scenario intermittently for several years.

As in the past, so now, the dissemination of this “information” brought reactions both from Ukraine and from those directly concerned. More specifically, Ukraine rejected the Russian claims as “absurd”.

More specifically, according to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Khorhi Tikhi: “Russian officials, known for their impressive record of lies, are once again trying to manufacture the old nonsense of the ‘dirty bomb.’ To be clear: Ukraine has denied such absurd Russian claims many times in the past, and we are officially denying them again now. We call on the international community to reject and condemn Russia’s dirty information bombs.”

The governments of France and Britain were also forced to give an answer to the above. On the part of the representative of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he commented on the issue, speaking of “flagrant misinformation”, while a representative of the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, stated that: “There is no truth in this”.

According to him: “This appears to be a clear attempt by Vladimir Putin to divert attention from his recent actions in Ukraine. You will have seen, I imagine, the Prime Minister’s remarks earlier today, where he paid tribute to the incredible resilience of the Ukrainian people, and the package of measures announced today in the areas of military support, humanitarian aid and reconstruction — an indication of where our support for Ukraine lies. We will continue our efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.”
