“You know what is at stake. Whether I will continue to be your prime minister depends on how strong a mandate you give the Social Democrats in the parliamentary elections on March 24, 2026,” Frederiksen said, adding that she had asked Denmark’s King Frederik X to call the election.

Greenland and the Faroe Islands also send MPs

Voters will vote on the new composition of the Danish parliament (Folketing) for the next four-year term.

The Danish parliament has a total of 179 deputies: 175 of them are elected directly in Denmark itself, and the remaining four mandates belong to the two semi-autonomous territories of the kingdom – Greenland and the Faroe Islands send two deputies to the parliament.

Social Democrat Frederiksen has been leading Denmark since mid-2019. She is currently at the head of the government with the liberal party Left (Venstre) of Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and the centrist Moderate Party of Foreign Minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen, who previously served as prime minister.
