The Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay ratified this Thursday (26) the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union.
The text was approved by deputies with 91 votes in favor and 2 against. As the agreement already had, the country became the first to ratify the treaty in Congress.
Argentina also decides today to ratify the text. The country’s Senate began discussing the agreement in the morning, which was approved on February 12 by the .
The expectation of the chancellery of Javier Milei’s country is to provisionally implement the agreement with the European Union, under the bilateral mechanism, even before the approval of the other Mercosur countries.
In Brazil, the agreement was approved by the Chamber and now needs approval from the Federal Senate, where it first goes through the Foreign Relations Committee.
Paraguay, the country where the agreement was reached in January, is in parliamentary recess and Congress should only analyze the text from March onwards.
Under the agreement, Mercosur will eliminate tariffs on 91% of EU exports over 15 years. The Europeans will progressively eliminate taxes on 92% of Mercosur exports within ten years.
