More and more people are looking for interesting, exotic plants for cultivation. Many people decide to grow oranges. Not everyone knows that there is an interesting hybrid of mandarin and grapefruit, i.e. tangelo, which is increasingly being cultivated privately. What is worth knowing about this plant and how to care for it?
Tangelo, also known as tangerine, is a hybrid of tangerine and grapefruit. It resembles a large tangerine, but has a more elongated shape, with a characteristic thickening at the base. The skin is intensely orange and although it looks solid, it is thin and easy to peel.
Tangelo fruits are juicy and sweet, with a slightly sour note – everyone will surely like their taste. They also have no or very few seeds.
Tangelo fruit grows on evergreen treeswhich in nature grow to a height of 6-9 meters. Their crown can be very spreading, reaching up to 3 meters in width.
Tangelo is a citrus fruit rich in vitamin C. It also contains B vitamins and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, zinc and calcium. Tangelo fruits contain a lot of water (about 50% of the pulp) and dietary fiber.
It is a healthy fruit worth tasting. It is suitable both for eating raw and for making preserves.
Under natural conditions, tangelo grows only in regions with a very warm climate. Plants also need good sunlight – at least 8 sunny hours a day. However, it is worth knowing that more and more people decide to grow exotic citrus fruits at home. Therefore, if someone would like to grow tangelo, it is difficult, but possible.
The plant needs well-drained soil with a pH of approximately 6.0-7.5. It must therefore be a rather neutral or alkaline soil. Systematic watering of the plant is extremely important – especially during drought. We should also take care of tangelo fertilization preparations rich in potassium and nitrogen. They support the development of leaves and fruiting of the plant.
Regularly trimming the branches will ensure better air circulation inside the crown and illumination of the branches inside. If we decide to grow tangelo outdoors, we need to find a bright corner for the plant where it would have the right amount of sun and at the same time be protected from the wind.
