Fire Department confirms 62 deaths due to rain in MG

Previous balance indicated 64 victims, but was revised; 56 bodies have already been identified and are being released to their families

The Fire Department confirmed 62 deaths caused by those that hit Juiz de Fora and Ubá, in Minas Gerais. The balance was released on Wednesday night (26.Feb.2026), at 10:31 pm, by the city halls and the corporation. Juiz de Fora recorded 56 victims. Ubá had 6 deaths.

The storms caused landslides, burials and collapses in the two cities in Minas Gerais. Rescue teams responded to 83 calls related to burials. Search and rescue operations rescued 239 people alive.

Nine people remain missing. Seven are from Juiz de Fora. Two are from Ubá.

The Fire Department initially announced that the death toll had reached 64. The corporation revised the count to 62 on Thursday (26.Feb.2026) after rechecking the data. The events started on Tuesday (Feb 24). Ubá has not recorded new victims since Wednesday (Feb 25).

As of this Friday (Feb 27), workers from Juiz de Fora, Matias Barbosa and Ubá are already (Service Time Guarantee Fund) at Caixa Econômica Federal. The maximum withdrawal amount is R$6,200, due to the balance available in the guarantee fund. It is necessary to have a balance in an FGTS account and not have made the withdrawal for the same reason in a period of less than 12 months. Caixa Econômica Federal informed that it will make an agency truck available to serve the affected population.

Juiz de Fora City Hall reported the collapse of buildings on Rua Doutor Augusto Eckman, in the Jardim Natal neighborhood, at 3:55 am this Thursday (Feb 26). At around 10:50 pm, a landslide occurred on Rua Tabajara, in Guaruá. The volume of precipitation in February reached 733 millimeters in Juiz de Fora. Civil Defense highlighted that this index represents 4 times the expected average for the month. Soil saturation compromised the urban drainage system.

An area of ​​low pressure close to the coast increased atmospheric instability in several regions of Minas Gerais this Wednesday (26.Feb). Meteorological conditions favored the occurrence of intense and continuous rain over the areas already affected.

In Juiz de Fora, 21 patients remain hospitalized. The municipality’s health units have registered 44 visits since Monday (Feb 24), as reported by the municipal management.

By 5pm on Thursday (26th February), 50 bodies had already been identified and were being released to families in Juiz de Fora. In Ubá, the 6 bodies found were identified and released by the Civil Police.

The number of homeless people in Juiz de Fora, Ubá and Matias Barbosa reached 5,510 people. Of this total, 3,500 are in Juiz de Fora, 1,200 in Ubá and 810 in Matias Barbosa. The numbers were updated by the Fire Department on Thursday night (Feb 26). The municipality of Matias Barbosa was also affected by the rains. The city registered homeless people, although it was not included in the number of deaths.
