Mother of three children, Michele Hundley Smith disappeared without a trace December 9, 2001 in North Carolina, in the United States.
The 38-year-old woman left her house that night to do some Christmas shopping. The destination would be a Kmart store in Martinsville, in the neighboring state of Virginia. Nothing predicted that this departure would end up becoming one of the most notable disappearance cases in the region.
The alarm sounded close to midnight, when Michele’s husband woke up the couple’s teenage daughter, Amanda, worried that the woman hadn’t returned home. Days later, on December 31, the family formalized the disappearance report: the authorities released searches by Michele and the green 1995 Pontiac Trans Sport van that the woman was driving that night.
At first, it was believed that Michele was in danger. The family never even considered the hypothesis that they would abandon their children of their own accord. But Time passed, and nothing was added to the case. No decisive witnesses appeared, the car was not located and no clues made it possible to clarify what had really happened: Michele seemed to have disappeared out of nowhere, into nowhere.
Over the years, the case has always generated speculation. In 2018, her daughter Amanda Smith spoke publicly about her mother’s disappearance in an episode of the podcast, where she described a difficult family context at height. Michele had problems with alcohol, had lost her job shortly before she disappeared and was in an unstable marital relationship. Amanda also said that her father suspected that Michele was secretly saving money in the months before her disappearance.
Despite the circumstances, the family never stopped fearing that Michele could have been the victim of a crime. The case has mobilized several entities over the years, including the FDA and the FBI.
Found alive
Michele Hundley Smith’s whereabouts remained unknown for more than two decades. The turning point only happened in February this year, when investigators received new information on February 19th.
The following day, they managed to make contact with Michele, confirming that she was “alive and well”. But the woman who was wanted for 24 years asked that her location not be made public, a request that authorities decided to respect.
The discovery closes the main mystery — whether Michele was alive or not — but does not completely eliminate the family’s suffering.
Daughter Amanda summed up the shock in a few words: “I’m ecstatic, I’m furious, I’m heartbroken,” she wrote on Bring Michele Hundley Smith Home on Facebook.
“My father went through so much,” Amanda wrote, “and I want to make it clear that although their marriage had problems (as many marriages do), my mother did not leave him simply because of a bad marriage… My father is a great man.”
Rockingham County Sheriff Samuel Scott Page explained that Michele has not filed any charges of crime or violence. According to the person responsible, the woman only said that she ran away due to domestic problems. The sheriff added that there are no formal records of abuse or other reports in this regard.
Despite this outcome, the legal aspect of the case may not yet be closed. The district attorney’s office is now reviewing whether there will be a basis for any accusations related to abandonmenta possibility mentioned by authorities after it was confirmed that Michele left and remained absent for 24 years without contacting her children.
Amanda also admitted that she has not completely given up hope of one day rebuilding some kind of relationship with her mother, now 62, who she has never forgotten.
“When my mother was part of my daily life, she showed me a love and bond that will never be forgotten,” said Amanda.
Michele’s cousin, Barbara Byrd, also told local station WFMY, cited by , that she had promised Michele’s brother — who has since passed away — that one day they would find her. Against all expectations, this promise ended up being fulfilled, although not in the desired way.
