Vehicle derailed for an unknown reason, near the city center; ambulances were at the scene
The derailment of a tram, which collided with a building, killed two people and injured 38 in the Italian city of Milan, a police source told AFP. THE tram derailed for an unknown reason, near the city center. Ambulances were at the scene.
A Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, expressed condolences. The initial investigation indicates that the driver did not activate a track change, according to local media. “There was a man trapped under the tram. His arm was trapped,” Valerio Gaglione, who was passing by, told AFP. “There were a lot of injured people inside the tram, I saw an elderly man covered in blood.”
One of the victims was an Italian man of around 60 years old, and the other, an immigrant who lived in the cityindicated the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala. One of them was hit by the tram when it derailed, and the other was a passenger, he added. “It doesn’t appear to be a technical issue, but rather something related to the driver.”
Witnesses stated that the tram was traveling at high speed, but it is not known whether it exceeded the 50 km/h limit. “I just heard a huge noise,” Anna, 27, who was in a nearby office when the collision occurred, told AFP. “I saw that part of the tram broke into a store.”
The yellow and white tram could be seen crossing the street on the outskirts of Milan’s historic center.
