According to information cited by the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, the CIA had been monitoring the supreme leader for months and informed Israel that Khamenei would attend a meeting of senior Iranian officials at his palace in Tehran on Saturday morning.
Precise knowledge of the timing of the meeting allowed US-Israeli forces to rush the strike, seizing the opportunity to target the leader during the meeting.
The initial plan called for an attack during the night to take advantage of the darkness, according to the newspaper, which noted that the strike was finally launched at 09:40 (local time, 08:10 Greek time) with long-range air-to-surface missiles.
The family tragedy
