Putin’s double standard: Khamenei’s assassination is a ‘cynical violation of all norms’ as Russia invades Ukraine

The president of Iran, Vladimir Putin, condemned this Sunday the death of the supreme leader of Iran, the Ayatollah in the offensive launched against the Persian country by Israeli and American forces and assured that it was an assassination, committed with a ”cynical rape” of the standards.

“Please accept my deepest condolences for the assassination of the supreme leader of Iran, Sayyid Ali Khamenei, and his family, committed in a cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law,” Putin said in a telegram sent to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The head of the Kremlin asked his Iranian counterpart to convey his deepest condolences and words of support to all the people of the Islamic Republic and assured that Khamenei will always be remembered as a “prominent statesman” who made an enormous contribution to the development of relations between both countries.

This is Putin’s first reaction to the events surrounding Iran, a country with which Russia has a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. This Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry already condemned the attacks by Israel and the United States on the Islamic Republic and denounced that these were planned in advance without Tehran doing anything to provoke them.

Likewise, Moscow demanded an end to the escalation and return the situation to a political and diplomatic channel. “Russia, as always, is ready to facilitate the search for peaceful solutions based on international law, mutual respect and balance of interests,” the statement added.

On January 30, amid growing tensions between Washington and Tehran, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, made a surprise visit to Moscow and was received by Putin, without the results of that meeting being made public.
