Iran’s ambassador to Brazil says country attacked military bases, not neighboring nations

Following US and Israeli attacks, Iranian missiles and drones hit Israel, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia

Iran’s ambassador to Brazil, Abdollah Nekounam, stated, in a press conference this Monday (2), that the country did not launch an attack against neighboring countriesand yes against military bases. After attacks coordinated by the United States and Israel that killed Iranian officials, such as the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, missiles and drones from the country hit Israel, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

“Our action is understandable and this understanding comes from the fact that when you are being attacked by a base, you cannot just watch,” declared Nekounam.

According to Iran’s ambassador, the targets of the attacks were two United States military bases who are in these countries. According to Nekounam, all facilities that are used against Iran will suffer a retaliation.

The ambassador also stated that the world is experiencing a “complex geopolitical situation” and that some countries, like the United States, seek unilateralism. Nekounam also stated that Iran’s neighbors need to pressure Washington to stop attacking Iran.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the main maritime passage for oil in the Middle East and whose closure could impact global prices, the ambassador said that things like this lead to war situations.

Nekounam also recalled that Khamenei, who died on Saturday (28), highlighted that an attack on Iran would lead to a regional war.

Abdollah Nekounam also thanked the note released by Itamaraty over the weekend, in which the Brazilian government against the Iranians.

“We believe and see this action by the Brazilian government as valuable, highlighting sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of governments”, stated Nekounam, in an interview with Brazilian journalists.

The ambassador said that Donald Trump “torn up” the nuclear agreement with Iran in 2018. The agreement was signed during the Barack Obama administration and involved the largest world powers.

Abdollah Nekounam stated that Iranian studies related to nuclear issues take place for peaceful purposes. He also said they will define “the consequences on the battlefield.”

Iran says it will not negotiate with the US

Following US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran, the powerful head of the Iranian National Security Council, Ali Larijani, . “We will not negotiate with the USA”, declared Larijani this Monday, in a post on social media. He denied reports in the press that Iranian representatives had tried to start talks with Washington.
