At a meeting with the ambassadors of the so-called quintet at the same time the president asked the international community to put pressure on Israel to stop its airstrikes on targets in Lebanon. While Hezbollah criticizes the government’s restrictions, the Israeli military continued shelling the movement’s command centers on Tuesday.
The Lebanese government’s decision to ban the military activities of the Hezbollah militant movement is “irreversible,” according to President Joseph Awn. He made this statement at a meeting with ambassadors from the so-called quintet – France, United States, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. TASR writes about it with reference to the AFP agency.
- The Lebanese government has taken an irreversible decision banning Hezbollah’s military activities.
- Hezbollah has rejected the ban on military activities and is asking the government to confront Israel.
- Israel continues intensive attacks on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.
- The Lebanese army partially withdrew troops from positions near the border with Israel.
Israeli strikes on Hezbollah
Hezbollah on Monday condemned the unprecedented decision of the Lebanese government to ban its military activities. Hezbollah says the government should instead confront Israel’s attacks.
Israel on Tuesday continued its intense strikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and allowed its troops to take control of more strategic positions in the south of the country. In response, the Lebanese army withdrew some of its soldiers from a position near the Israeli border.
Reaction to conflict
At the meeting, Awn called on the quintet countries “to put pressure on Israel to stop its aggressive attacks against Lebanon.”
The government’s decision to ban Hezbollah’s military activities came in response to the militant movement’s involvement in the conflict in the Middle East. Militants, which Iran has long supported financially and with weapons, fired rockets into northern Israel on Monday night, prompting retaliatory attacks. Israel continued its strikes on Tuesday. According to him, the targets of the attacks are command centers and ammunition depots in Beirut.
