US President Donald Trump expressed his belief on Tuesday that if the US and Israel had not attacked Iran, Iran would have attacked first. He said this at a meeting with the German chancellor Friedrich Merz in the White House. According to Trump, the US military has destroyed practically all targets in Iran since Saturday. Merz stated, that Germany agrees with the US that the “terrible” regime in Iran must be removed. He also wants to talk to Trump about the war in Ukraine, informs TASR.
“They were going to attack first, I had a strong feeling about that… I didn’t want that to happen,” Trump said without specifying who Iran was targeting. According to him, he acquired this feeling due to the development of the negotiations that the states indirectly conducted in recent weeks.
However, in front of journalists in the White House, he praised the achievements of the US military so far in interventions against Iran. “They don’t have a navy, it was destroyed, they don’t have an air force, it was destroyed, they don’t have air reconnaissance, it was destroyed,” he said upon receiving Merz. In response to the question, the American president also denied that Israel had drawn the United States into the war against Iran. “No, maybe I made them do it,” he said.
According to Trump, the worst-case scenario for Iran would be if he took power after the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “someone who is just as bad as the previous government”. “It can happen, but we don’t want it,” stated. He reiterated that some of the possible leaders considered by the US administration to lead Iran are now dead.
