Chamber summons Vieira to explain the government’s position on the war in Iran

Chancellor will have to provide clarifications at the Foreign Relations and National Defense Commission, where the opposition is dominant

Mauro Vieira is summoned by the Chamber to explain the Brazilian government’s position on the war in Iran

O tone of Brazilian government demonstrations in official notes on the war in the Middle East became reason for political questioning in Congress. The Chancellor Mauro Vieira was called up to explain itself to the deputies in the Committee on Foreign Relations and National Defense, in the Chamber, dominated by opposition. Now, a date will be scheduled. The minister is obliged to attend.

On Tuesday (3), the Lula government expressed concern with the spread of conflict to Lebanon, with clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, a Shiite militia allied with Tehran.

In a statement released by Itamaraty, the Brazilian government said that it “follows, with great concern, the extension of the current conflict in the Middle East to Lebanon, with the launch of projectiles by Hezbollah against Israel and Israeli attacks against Lebanese territory, including the Beirut region”.

This is the third note from the Lula government regarding the conflict in the region. The government against Iran, which resulted in , Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and highlighted that it occurred during a diplomatic negotiation process.

Then, the government expressed the “escalation of hostilities in the Gulf region”, a reference to Iran’s retaliatory firing of missiles and drones at US installations in Arab countries. The country called for the “stopping of offensive military actions”.

Trip

War also became a variable in defining visit plans from Lula to Washington. Lula expected to make the trip in the second half of this month, to discuss mainly the bilateral relationship with the American president, Donald Trump, but now members of the government understand that the duration of the conflict could disrupt visit planning.

End of hostilities

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made an appeal on Tuesday for “immediate cessation of hostilities” of the conflict in the Middle East and called for compliance with the 2024 ceasefire agreement and the 2006 United Nations Security Council Resolution. Furthermore, there are no records of Brazilians killed in attacks.

According to Itamaraty, they have accompanied “with great concern, the extension of the current conflict in the Middle East to Lebanon”, due to the launch of projectiles by Hezbollah against Israel and also Israel’s attacks against Lebanese territory, including the Beirut region.

Brazilian embassies in Lebanon and the region maintain contact with their respective Brazilian communities and make recommendations available on websites and social media.
