Only the ignorant know everything – 03/03/2026 – Tostão

There are a hundred days left until the World Cup. The Brazilian team’s lack is on the sides.

If Uruguayan Piquerez, from Palmeiras, were Brazilian, he would probably start at left back. Piquerez plays well from one end of the field to the other. His crosses are precise, like Flaco Lopes’ goal against São Paulo. Abel Ferreira uses this quality very well.

Alex Sandro, from Flamengo, due to his experience and the lack of another excellent full-back, should be the starter in the World Cup. The same occurs on the right side, which should be occupied by defenders Militão or Danilo.

In Brazil and around the world, the number of goals from crossed balls, with the ball moving or stationary, has increased significantly, especially on corners. One cannot confuse the efficient crosses from the baseline with those from the middle. Brazilian teams, instead of exchanging passes from the sides and making triangulations until reaching the baseline to cross, abuse balls played in the area. Either to get rid of it or to count on luck and the ball goes to the teammate.

Andreas Pereira, in addition to being a great midfielder, as he scores well and has an excellent pass, is accurate when taking corners. More than that. Against São Paulo, under the guidance of Abel Ferreira, he did very well in individual marking against the skilled Marcos Antônio. Among the players who are not highly rated to be called up by Ancelotti, I would call up Andreas Pereira, who would be a good backup for Bruno Guimarães.

I understand the likely absence of Matheus Pereira, from Cruzeiro, among those called up, as he had no chance to be tested. But I’m very curious to see him in the national team, if he would be able to execute the same efficient and beautiful plays and effective plays in the Brazilian team that he does in Cruzeiro.

The Brazilian team, with Ancelotti, has adopted the same tactical design: with four defenders, two midfielders, a centralized offensive midfielder, a center forward and two wingers who also return to score. This is one of the reasons why the coach chose Vinicius centrally and in attack, to prevent him from having to recover on the left and participate in the marking. Ancelotti wants to see him free and attacking. Will Ancelotti, against strong teams who prioritize ball control and who play with a trio of midfielders, reinforce their marking and construction of plays in midfield?

In addition to his technical and tactical knowledge, Ancelotti is a calm, lucid, balanced coach who usually finds the right paths. Obviously, you have many doubts. Only the ignorant know everything.

Resignation

Strange, absurd and surprising the dismissal of Filipe Luís, a competent and successful coach. Certainly, the dismissal was planned and depended solely on arrangements with Leonardo Jardim, former Cruzeiro coach. Recent title losses do not justify the coach’s departure. The team will win and lose. The team is very good, but it’s not great, as the board and some of the fans think.

Leonardo Jardim will have the same difficulties as Filipe Luís, in taking advantage of the best technical conditions in Arrascaeta and Paquetá, as their ideal positions are the same.
