This Tuesday, the US president had a meeting with Friedrich Merz, chancellor of Germany. In conversation with journalists, he did not hide his displeasure with the decision of the Perdo Sánchez Government.
And he announced that he will cut ties with Spain: “It’s been terrible. We will cut all trade relations with Spain. We don’t want to have anything to do with Spain.”
On Monday, the Madrid Government already announced that the American planes had been transferred to other European countries.
“Absolutely not. At the bases in Morón and Rota, no type of assistance was provided – absolutely none – to this action, to these attacks”, assured the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles.
Rangel in Parliament
The parliamentary committee on Foreign Affairs will hear the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, on the use of the Lajes base, in the Azores, by the United States, following a request from the PS approved this Tuesday.
The PS’s request was approved by the commission, with the abstention of the PSD and Chega, and in the face of criticism from the social-democratic deputy Paulo Neves, who accused the PS of partisanship on this issue.
In the initiative, which was handed over to the Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities committee on Friday, the eve of the start of US attacks on Israel on Iran, the socialist deputies considered that the increase in movements at the military base, observed in recent weeks, is “highly sensitive, with doubts remaining regarding the ultimate purpose of the operations in question and their respective international legal framework”.
Catarina Louro (PS) said, at the meeting, that images and news have been transmitted that show the increase in traffic at the Lajes basewhich “raises several questions.”
On Monday, Paulo Rangel said that the US did not use the Lajes Base in the attack on Iran. Portugal was out of last Saturday’s military movements, he assured.
