“We have a lot of time, but Cuba is ready, after 50 years,” Trump said

The American president Donald Trump declared this Friday (6) that “Cuba will fall soon”in a telephone interview with the CNN news channel in which he highlighted the military successes of his second term.

“Cuba will also fall. They are very eager to reach an agreement“, he said of the communist government in Havana. “They want to make a deal, so I’m going to put (Secretary of State) Marco (Rubio) there and we’ll see how it ends,” he added.

As Relations between Washington and the island are going through a new period of turbulence in recent weeks.

After the overthrow and capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by American forces in early January, the United States demanded and obtained from the interim power in Caracas to suspend oil shipments to its ally Cuba.

We have a lot of time, but Cuba is ready, after 50 years“, Trump told CNN, in reference to the decades of communist rule on the island after the revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959.

A day earlier, the president had stated at the White House that he was focused on the offensive launched against Iran last week, but that was before Cubans who left the island could return.

The energy blockade de facto imposed by Washington on Cuba, where no oil tanker has entered since January 9, has worsened the long economic crisis and the recurring blackouts faced by the population.

The move also threatens to deal a severe blow to tourism, the island’s second source of foreign exchange after the export of medical services.
