Gol announces international hub at Galeão and provides direct flight from Rio to NY

Rio will be the new starting point for Gol Linhas Aéreas’ international strategy. This Friday, the company announced that Tom Jobim International Airport, Galeão, will be the company’s new international hub.

The idea is for the terminal to function as a connection center to supply routes abroad, concentrating passengers coming from different Brazilian cities before boarding for international destinations.

Gol’s CEO, Celso Ferrer, signaled that the strategy is aligned with the arrival of new Airbus aircraft, which will allow longer flights with greater passenger capacity.

New rules: Anac approves rule to punish undisciplined passengers on domestic flights

— We are going to fly to New York from here to Galeão with a direct flight starting in July — said the executive, to journalists.

Flights to Europe

According to the executive, 85% of Gol’s growth in 2025 took place in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to direct connections between the capital of Rio de Janeiro and New York, the company will also expand its presence in the European market.

— We had the courage and we are going to announce the first flights to Europe. The first destination will be Lisbon — said Ferrer.

Milestone for the company

The announcement of the incorporation of five new aircraft by Gol, made this Friday morning, marks a new moment for the company, which ended its judicial recovery process nine months ago.

25 years ago, Gol only operated with a standardized Airbus fleet in the 737 model, a single-aisle plane with a capacity of around 180 passengers.

Now, with the five A330-900 neo model aircraft scheduled to be delivered between this year and next year, the company will have planes with two aisles – the so-called widebody, wide-body – which can carry 250 to 300 passengers, that is, almost double the capacity.
