On Tuesday, two men fired several shots at the US consulate in Toronto, Canada. The police responded with increased protection of American and Israeli diplomatic buildings in the city, since the shooting threatened Canada’s national security. TASR informs about it according to the AFP agency.
According to Toronto police official Frank Barredo, the men approached the consulate in downtown Toronto in a white SUV around 4:30 a.m. local time (9:30 a.m. CET). they got out of it and fired several shots from a pistol at the consulate.
There were people there at the time, but “the building is very well secured, strongly fortified, and no one was injured,” Barredo said. Canadian Federal Police official Chris Leather stated that “it was definitely an incident threatening national security”. “Whether it is a terrorist act will be investigated,” he added.
Leather confirmed that security is also being beefed up at the US and Israeli diplomatic buildings in Ottawa. According to him, the Canadian police is cooperating with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in the investigation.
Last weekend, protests were held outside the US consulate against the war in the Middle East, which was sparked by the attacks on Iran by the US and Israel on February 28. In recent days, there have also been shootings near three synagogues around Toronto, but no injuries were reported. Barredo stated that for now it is “too early” to talk about any connection. “We don’t look at these incidents in isolation. We look at them collectively,” he added.
