This is the second time, in a hearing at the National Congress, that the minister has spoken explicitly about the topic, even after negative repercussions.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, once again defended this Wednesday (11) the use of nuclear technology in the defense sector. He also suggested changes to the Constitution, which today determines that all nuclear activity be exclusively for peaceful purposes in sectors such as energy or medicine. This Wednesday, he participates in a public hearing at the Chamber’s Mines and Energy Committee (CME).
It is the second time, in a hearing at the National Congress, that the minister has spoken explicitly about the topic. After the repercussion of Silveira’s first statement on the nuclear issue in the defense sector, the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) released a statement reinforcing that Brazil fully complies with the international commitments that consolidate this pacifist position in the nuclear sphere.
The ministry also declared, in a note, that “the people and their representatives in a democratic country have the legitimate right to debate how to preserve their absolute sovereignty”, according to the note.
