Who is Trump’s advisor and critic of Moraes who wants to visit Bolsonaro in prison

Darren Beattie’s name returned to the center of the diplomatic crisis between Brazil and the United States after former president Jair Bolsonaro asked the Federal Supreme Court for authorization to receive him on a prison visit. The request was forwarded to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case at the Federal Supreme Court.

Beattie holds a strategic position in President Donald Trump’s administration. Since February, he has served as a senior advisor responsible for monitoring and guiding American policies related to Brazil within the United States Department of State.

In the organizational chart of American diplomacy, Beattie also has other functions. He temporarily directs the Educational and Cultural Affairs sector and presides over the United States Institute of Peace, an institution funded by the US Congress focused on mediating international conflicts.

On the State Department’s official website, the advisor is presented as responsible for the area of public diplomacy and a defender of the international promotion of freedom of expression.

Beattie’s role in American politics began during Trump’s first term, when he worked at the White House as a presidential speechwriter. His time in government, however, was interrupted in 2018, after his participation in an event attended by white nationalists came to light, which led to his dismissal.

In the following years, he continued to draw attention for controversial statements on social media. In a 2021 publication, the State Department itself mocked. Already during the 2024 presidential campaign, he suggested that sectors of the American intelligence community could be involved in assassination attempts against Trump.

In another episode, he was accused of racism and sexism after stating that “competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work.”

The advisor was also at the center of a diplomatic episode involving Brazil and the United States. In July 2025, he published on social media that Moraes would be “the main architect of the censorship and persecution complex directed against Bolsonaro”. The statement led the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the main US diplomatic representative in Brasília to provide clarification.

The speech took place at a time when Moraes was leading the criminal case against Bolsonaro at the STF. The former president was convicted of participating in an attempted coup related to the 2022 elections and is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence.

At the same time, the Trump administration announced sanctions against the Brazilian minister. American authorities accused Moraes of authorizing arbitrary preventive detentions and restricting freedom of expression in investigations into the alleged coup plot.

After the announcement of the sanctions, Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of the former president, publicly thanked Beattie for his actions on social media. Another member of the family, senator Flávio Bolsonaro, is identified as a possible right-wing candidate in the next Brazilian presidential election.
