The son of the convicted ex-president, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, announced his father’s transfer to the hospital on Friday on the X social network, saying that he woke up with chills and vomited profusely.
Ongoing health problems
Bolsonaro was operated on in December 2025 due to an inguinal hernia. He subsequently underwent a procedure to treat recurrent hiccups. Chronic hiccups have also troubled him in the past, and in connection with it he underwent examinations as early as 2021. Bolsonaro has repeatedly had health problems since he suffered a stab wound during the presidential election campaign in 2018.
American diplomat Darren Beattie allegedly wanted to come to Brazil to visit the imprisoned Bolsonaro. On Friday, the current Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, “banned him from entering the country.” An AFP source confirmed that Beattie’s visa had been revoked due to “lies about the purpose of the visit”.
Punishment for attempted coup
Bolsonaro, who was in the presidency from 2019 to 2022, is serving a 27-year prison sentence for an attempted coup. He has been in prison since November 2025. He denies guilt and claims that he is a victim of political persecution. He served the beginning of his sentence under house arrest. After he tried to remove the monitoring bracelet from his ankle, he was placed in prison, as the court assessed Bolsonaro’s act as an escape attempt.
