Jair Bolsonaro hospitalized again

Segurança reforçada, ecrã gigante, 500 jornalistas... Bolsonaro começa a ser julgado em Brasília, mas é preciso estar "com um olho em Washington"

Since 2018, the former president of Brazil has faced several health problems related to the knife attack he suffered during that year’s presidential campaign, when he was injured in the abdomen

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro was transferred this morning from the prison where he is serving a sentence of more than 27 years to a hospital in Brasília after experiencing health problems, said his son and senator Flávio Bolsonaro.

“I just received news that my father is on his way to the hospital, once again. Preliminary information that he woke up with chills and vomited a lot”, wrote Flávio Bolsonaro on social media.

The transfer was confirmed by the Military Police, responsible for the prison where the former president is held, who stated that the medical team will provide additional information.

Since 2018, Bolsonaro has faced several health problems related to the knife attack he suffered during that year’s presidential campaign, when he was injured in the abdomen.

Since then, the former president has undergone several hospitalizations and medical procedures to treat complications resulting from this attack.

This is Bolsonaro’s first departure since he began serving his sentence for an attempted coup d’état, at the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, on January 15.

The last time he was hospitalized was when he was detained in a special cell at the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília, where he underwent four surgeries and remained hospitalized between December 24, 2025 and January 1 of this year.

Bolsonaro’s latest uneasiness came just hours after Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court (STF) annulled the authorization granted to an advisor to the US president to visit the former Brazilian leader, after the Government warned against possible foreign interference.

Bolsonaro began serving an effective prison sentence of 27 years and three months on November 25, 2025, as a result of his conviction on September 11, 2025 for the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, qualified damage due to violence and serious threat and vandalism (deterioration of listed heritage).

The former president never acknowledged his electoral defeat in the October 2022 presidential elections, raised unfounded suspicions about the use of electronic voting machines, encouraged anti-democratic demonstrations at military bases and, according to the Court, designed plans to remain in power and even kill political and judicial opponents, including Lula da Silva himself and judge Alexandre de Moares.

The events culminated in the attacks in Brasília, on January 8, 2023.

Thousands of the former president’s supporters invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace, in Brasília, in an attempted coup d’état to depose Lula da Silva from the Presidency.
