Iran has allowed Indian tankers exceptional passage through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran made an exception and allowed two Indian tankers to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, breaking the previous blockade of maritime traffic.

Iran has allowed at least two Indian ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali said. This is a rare exception to the blockade, which disrupted the global supply of energy raw materials, reports the AFP agency and the India Today website, writes TASR.

Although Fathalí did not specify how many vessels were allowed safe passage, India’s Ministry of Ports and Shipping said on Saturday that they were two tankers flying its flag. The vessels carry liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and are bound for ports in western India.

Safe passage to India

“They (ships) passed safely through the Strait of Hormuz early this morning and are on their way to India,” said Rajes Kumar Sinha, secretary of the Ministry of Ports and Shipping, at a press conference.

Since late February, when the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran, Tehran has largely shut down traffic through the key sea route, which normally carries about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied gas supplies.
