The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Thursday afternoon, 11, that he believes that the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, approved the terms proposed by the American government to end the war in the Middle East. He also said that “everyone in Iran approved the agreement” and declared that Tehran wants to close the agreement “much more” than Washington.
According to Trump, the agreement should be formalized as a “very strong memorandum of understanding”. He added that the US will lift the maritime blockade on Iran’s coastal areas once the document is signed.
Trump also said the Strait of Hormuz will open with the signing of the agreement, possibly on Saturday or Monday. He then said that the strait “has been open for months” and that the information would have gone unnoticed by the international community.
The comments took place this Thursday at an event proclaiming incentives for American fishermen, in the Oval Office of the White House. On the occasion, Trump spoke briefly about Iran and the government’s measures to support farmers, before opening space to answer questions from reporters.
Despite the Republican’s statements, a series of contradictions are circulating in the international media. According to the Iranian news agency Farsthere are doubts in Tehran about which version of the agreement Trump is referring to. If it is Iran’s proposal, without requirements demanded by the US in recent weeks, there is a high probability of approval by the main Persian authorities.
Other vehicles point out that Iran delivered a final draft of the agreement to Qatar to pass on to Washington yesterday and that, upon approval, a process of understanding could begin. According to Axiosthe terms include release of Iranian assets, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, among other points.
