Switzerland stops US military flights: Bern invokes neutrality law

Switzerland did not allow two American military reconnaissance planes to fly through its airspace. It did so by invoking its neutrality act as the United States continues to wage war against Iran. However, three more flights, one service and two transport, were allowed to enter. The government informed about it on Saturday. TASR writes about it according to the Reuters and DPA agencies.

“The Neutrality Act prohibits overflights by parties to a conflict that serve military purposes related to the conflict. Humanitarian and medical overflights are permitted, including the transport of wounded persons, as well as overflights not related to the conflict,” the government said in its statement. At the same time, the government in Bern warned that it may proceed with banning further overflights if their number is unusually high and their purpose cannot be determined.

Before the war, Switzerland was the site of talks between Iran and the US on the future of Iran’s nuclear program. It also has a protecting power mandate. Its diplomats in Iran represent the interests of the United States and mediate contact between the hostile powers.
