Kazakhstan adopts new constitution and strengthens presidential power

Astana – In Kazakhstan, a new constitution was adopted by referendum that officially promises more democracy – but apparently consolidates the power of the president through several articles. According to forecasts published by state media on Sunday evening, more than 86 percent of voters voted for the proposal. The approximately 12.5 million eligible voters had been motivated in advance with a massive campaign to go to the polls and vote “yes”.
