It starts today, Tuesday: rain, sometimes intense and accompanied by thunder, strong winds and increased sea agitation.
It’s the week that spring begins, in several parts of the country it has already smelled the change of season, but days that feel like winter are still coming.
The weather in mainland Portugal will be affected between today (Tuesday) and Saturday by Therese depression, anticipating rain sometimes intense and accompanied by thunderstorm, strong wind and increase in agitation maritime.
In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) says that the Therese depression “will be centered on west of mainland Portugal”, affecting the weather between late afternoon on Tuesday and Saturday.
Thus, from today onwards, “an increase in cloud cover is expected across the entire territory and there will be the possibility of showers from the end of the afternoon onwards, which will be more likely on the coast of the southern region”, the note reads.
On Wednesday, adds the IPMA, the depression will lead to the “occurrence of showers, which will be more likely in the Center and South and mainly on the coast, which may be occasionally intense and accompanied by thunderstorm.”
As for the vento, it will oscillate between “the eastern quadrant and the southern quadrant” and will increase in intensity, sometimes blowing strongly in the coastal strip and in the highlands, with gusts of up to 65 kilometers/hour.
Relative to sea unrest, the IPMA says that a “temporary increase” is expected on the west coast, for northwest waves that could reach close to four meters in significant height.

IPMA issued several yellow warnings: Setúbal, Leiria, Lisbon, Beja and Faro because of the rain between 00:00 and 09:00 on Wednesday.

During the passage of the depression, the Azores will be affected by low temperatures, predicting the IPMA in the Western group (Flores and Corvo), minimum values between 7 and 9 degrees Celsius (°C), while in the Central (Terceira, Faial, Graciosa, Pico and São Jorge) and Eastern (São Miguel and Santa Maria) groups they may fall to values between 3ºC e axis 5ºC.
