Current number 39 in the world rankings of the ATP (Association of Professional Tennis Players), João Fonseca beat Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (46th) in the first round of the Masters 1000 in Miami, played on the hard courts installed at the Hard Rock Stadium.
The victory was by two sets to one, with partials of 6/4, 3/6 and 6/2, in 1h50 of match.
In the second round, Fonseca will face the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, current leader of the ranking and champion of the Miami Open in 2022.
It will be the second meeting between the 19-year-old tennis player from Rio and Alcaraz. They faced each other for the first time in December 2025, in a friendly match also held in Miami, won by the Spaniard.
It was the second clash between Fonseca and Marozsan on the circuit. In the first, in May 2025, the Hungarian won by two sets to zero, in the first round of the Masters 1000 in Rome.
The Brazilian, who suffered from physical problems at the beginning of the season, is coming off a good participation in the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells — he advanced to the round of 16, stopping only the Italian Jannik Sinner, second in the rankings and who ended up becoming the tournament champion.
In the 2025 edition of the Miami Open, Fonseca advanced to the third round, when he was eliminated by Australian Alex de Minaur.
