Lula formalizes Haddad’s departure from Finance and appoints Durigan as new minister

Fernando Haddad leaves the department to enter the dispute for the government of São Paulo; decree was published in this Friday’s edition of the Official Gazette of the Union (20)

The announcement had already been anticipated by the president on Thursday (19), during participation in the 17th Federative Caravan, in São Paulo.

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) officialized the departure of Fernando Haddad command of the Ministry of Finance and named Dario Carnevalli Durigan for or position. The decree was published in the edition of Official Gazette of the Union this Friday (20).

Behind the scenes, Durigan was already seen as the natural name for the succession. He already held the role of executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance since 2023occupying the position of “number two” on the economic team after the departure of Gabriel Galípolo, who was appointed president of the Central Bank.

At 41 years old, Durigan is from Bebedouro, in the interior of São Paulo. With a career that combines work in the public and private sectors, he has presided over the board of Bank of Brazilis part of the Fiscal Council of Vale and was director of Public Policies at WhatsApp in Latin America.

In public service, he went through Attorney General of the Union, by the City of São Paulo and by Casa Civil, working on legal, economic issues and political articulation with the National Congress. Graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP) and master’s degree from the University of Brasília (UnB), the new minister has a technical profile and experience in public management and the formulation of economic policies.

Pre-candidacy for the government of São Paulo

. “I’m going to enter this election to win. But the political victory is even greater than the electoral victory”, said Haddad alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The declaration took place at an event in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), which also included the participation of vice-president Geraldo Alckmin.

“I insist on saying that political victory is always possible. You just need to present yourself with a clean face, with a good project, to awaken people’s conscience. We owe this to São Paulo. The state needs to wake up,” said Haddad. “We have all suffered defeats. [Mas] The correct way to hold an election is to go into battle to win the election, and know whose side you are going to be on, who you are going to fight for”, he added.
