Racing app exposes location of French aircraft carrier at war, says newspaper

A security breach involving the use of physical monitoring applications exposed the location of one of France’s main military assets in the midst of a conflict scenario. According to the newspaper report The Worlda French sailor inadvertently revealed the position of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle when recording an activity on the Strava app.

The episode occurred on March 13, when the soldier ran a little over 7 kilometers in around 35 minutes. By sharing exercise data through a connected watch, he ended up making the vessel’s geolocation public.

The data indicated that the aircraft carrier was in the Mediterranean Sea, northwest of Cyprus and approximately 100 kilometers off the coast of Türkiye. The region is considered strategic in the current context of tensions in the Middle East.

Although the presence of the French naval air group in the area had already been announced by President Emmanuel Macron at the beginning of March, the disclosure of precise coordinates represents a relevant risk from a military point of view.

The exposure was not limited to an isolated point. Using the soldier’s profile, it was possible to map part of the aircraft carrier’s movement over the last few weeks. Previous records indicate activities near the French coast in February, in addition to a stop in Copenhagen during a stopover.

In the specific case of March, satellite images analyzed just over an hour after the activity confirmed the presence of the vessel in the region. The characteristic shape of the ship, measuring around 262 meters, was identified in the images.

The leak comes at a time of escalating tensions in the region. France has already confirmed the death of a soldier in the conflict, even without direct participation, following an attack by pro-Iran groups in Iraq.

Furthermore, French bases have been targeted by Iranian missiles, which increases the sensitivity of any information that could expose strategic positions.

The public disclosure of routes and positions, even if indirect, is considered a serious failure in war scenarios, where the location of military assets is one of the most sensitive pieces of information.
