Brazil has high circulation of the flu virus in several regions

The main form of prevention against serious cases and deaths is the vaccine; vaccination campaign will be from March 28th to May 30th

The new InfoGripe bulletin from Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz), released on Friday (20 March 2026), warns of the increase in the circulation of Influenza A in the country.

The virus continues to advance at a national level, driving the increase in Srag (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in Mato Grosso and most of the Northeastern States, except Piauí, and in the North, Amapá, Pará and Rondônia. In the Southeast, the virus is on the rise in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. Here is the document (PDF – 4 MB).

Prevalence of cases and deaths

Since the beginning of 2026, positive cases of SARS have been due to the following viruses:

  • rhinovirus – 41.9%
  • influenza A – 21.8%
  • Sars-CoV-2 (covid-19) – 14.7%
  • VSR – 13.4%
  • influenza B – 1,5%

Among the deaths, 37.3% were caused by Sars-CoV-2 (covid-19); 28.6% influenza A; 21.8% rhinovirus; 4.5% RSV; and 2.5% influenza B.

In the last 4 epidemiological weeks, the prevalence among deaths was 30.8% for influenza A; 30.8% for Sars-CoV-2; 27.5% for rhinovirus; 5.5% for RSV; and 2.7% for influenza B.

According to Fiocruz researcher Tatiana Portella, the Ministry of Health defined 3 national vaccination strategies for 2026, focusing on expanding vaccination coverage and reducing vaccine-preventable diseases.

The influenza vaccination campaign in the Northeast, Central-West, South and Southeast regions will be carried out from March 28th to May 30th.

“The main form of prevention against serious cases and deaths is the vaccine. We already have the RSV vaccine for pregnant women and on the 28th the vaccination against influenza A will begin for priority groups”said Tatiana.
