Stainless steel is synonymous with kitchen luxury. We long for it, but the moment we find out how much work it is, our enthusiasm may wane a bit. To keep this material always looking new, we can reach for supplies from the bathroom…
Polished stainless steel appliances are the decoration of a modern kitchen, but only until the first member of the household touches them. Fingerprints, greasy smudges and dried drops of water can turn even the most expensive and economical refrigerator into a really unsightly surface.

The treasure is hidden in the bathroom
Although we can find a lot of expensive chemical polishes in drugstores, the real treasure for steel maintenance is probably already hiding in our bathroom. It is nothing more than a hair conditioner. Does this sound like a bizarre idea? Maybe so, but this product is the best friend for stainless steel that such a refrigerator, stove or even a dishwasher could ask for. The reason is actually very similar to why we use conditioner on our hair.
It needs a microscopic film
The basis of the conditioner trick lies in its chemical composition. It is designed to create a microscopic, smooth and shiny film on the surface of the hair, which seals it and subsequently also repels dirt. This preparation works very similarly on stainless steel. Even polished stainless steel is not perfectly smooth under the microscope, but contains tiny pores. Then in them – even the one that we transfer to the place with our own fingers. The conditioner can fill these pores and thus create an invisible protective layer on the surface. The result is not only the shine of a “still new” appliance, but mainly a surface that is much more resistant to new fingerprints and other dirt.
It’s quick and easy
At the same time, the treatment procedure for such a device is incredibly easy and fast. First, of course, it is necessary to remove all gross dirt and grease from the stainless steel surface. A soft cloth (ideally a microfibre cloth) and lukewarm water with a drop of suitable detergent are completely sufficient for this. Once the surface is dry again, apply to a clean a a small amount of conditioner – for normally large surfaces, a volume roughly the size of a hazelnut will be sufficient. We then spread it over the entire surface of the appliance with circular movements. It is important to work in the direction of the fine lines that are visible on the stainless steel. This will ensure that the preparation gets deep into the structure of the surface material and does not create streaks. The main part of the work is now behind us.
Polish and forget…
After a few minutes, after which we let the conditioner work, it will be enough to polish the surface with the dry side of the cloth or paper towel. The difference will be apparent immediately. The stainless steel will take on a stunning shine and will once again look the same as when we removed the appliance from its original packaging. But the main magic comes the moment we touch the surface. Thanks to the protective film, no fingerprints stick to the steel – and if it happens to be, then a gentle wipe with a dry cloth will be enough and it will be clean again.
Several benefits in one treatment
What else do we gain by using hair conditioner on stainless steel appliances? Of course, a beautiful scent that, unlike special polishes, certainly does not irritate the respiratory tract. In addition, it gives the entire kitchen a soft and fresh aroma. It is also about ideal solution especially for households with small children or allergy sufferersbecause after polishing, unwanted and often not very safe chemicals do not remain on the appliances. In addition, you can also use up those leftover conditioners that you didn’t like in the bathroom or that are only left at the bottom of the bottle. Now the idea of air conditioner in the kitchen doesn’t seem as crazy as it did a few paragraphs ago, don’t you think?
