The project was born surrounded by curiosity, both because of the new material it can explore and because of the unusual name that the script assumes.
Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday night (25) that the Lord of the Rings franchise will get a new film, but what really surprised was the choice of screenwriter: Stephen Colbert.
Known for his acid humor and his work on American television, Colbert is also an avowed fan of JRR Tolkien’s work and will now take this passion to the big screen. The project will be written in partnership with his son, Peter McGee, and award-winning screenwriter Philippa Boyens, veteran of the original trilogy.
The origin of the idea is curious: it all started about two years ago, when Colbert delved into the first six chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring, excerpts that ended up being left out of the adaptation directed by Peter Jackson in 2001. Now, these never-before-seen moments can finally come to life on screen, further expanding the universe of the saga.
But the announcement did not come without controversy.
Colbert has gained even more political prominence in recent years after harshly criticizing Donald Trump’s government. His talk show, one of the most popular in the United States, ended up being canceled in 2025, a move that many directly associated with his political stance. As a result, his entry into the universe of The Lord of the Rings quickly sparked debate on social media.
Despite the discussions, there is no indication that the new film will have a political bias. On the contrary: the expectation is that the production maintains the epic tone and is faithful to the essence of the original work, focusing on adventures, friendship and the eternal struggle between good and evil, pillars that have established the saga as a global phenomenon.
Still without a release date or details about the cast, the project is already surrounded by curiosity, both because of the new material it can explore and because of the unusual name that the script takes on.
One thing is certain: Middle-earth never completely leaves the scene and, now, it promises to return with an approach that no one saw coming.
