Cruzeiro do Sul Prison will have its own UBS to serve inmates and reduce departures

Presídio de Cruzeiro do Sul terá UBS própria para atender detentos e reduzir saídas

The began strategic work for public safety and health in the Juruá Valley. With an investment of R$ 210 mila Basic Health Unit (UBS) is being built within the Penal Establishments Division of Cruzeiro do Sul. The initiative aims to fill a historical gap, as the municipality was the only one among the five with prison units in the state that did not yet have this internal medical support.

The new structure was planned to offer complete care without the inmate having to leave the prison complex. With more than 300 m² of built area, the space will have almost 20 rooms, including clinical offices and dental offices. According to Paulo Renato Dantas, head of the department’s Infrastructure Department, the project meets all the requirements of the National Secretariat for Penal Policies (Senappen).

Efficiency and Safety

The main advantage of the new UBS is the drastic reduction in the need for escorts and transfers of prisoners to municipal public hospitals. “We will carry out the majority of services here. This means a significant reduction in departures, which increases the security of both the unit and the external population”, said Elves Barros, head of the local penal division.

To make its operation viable, Iapen sought the support of Cruzeiro do Sul City Hall. The partnership is fundamental for adherence to the National Policy for Comprehensive Health Care for People Deprived of Liberty (Pnaisp). “Basic health is a specialty of the municipality. With this preventive care within the prison, we avoid the worsening of illnesses and unnecessary pressure on the external health system”, explained Gabriela Silveira, head of the Prison Health Division at Iapen.

Labor and Resocialization

In addition to the logistical benefit, the project has a strong resocialization bias. The construction is being carried out by the unit’s own inmates. For the work carried out, the inmates guarantee the remission of part of their sentences, transforming the construction site into an environment of qualification and reducing prison time.
