What does the Easter palm symbolize?
The Easter palm is one of the upcoming holidays. It has rich symbolism that combines Christian traditions with pagan and folk elements. The most important and direct association is Palm Sunday, which commemorates the solemn entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The crowds greeted Him, throwing palm branches and cloaks on the road, shouting “Hosanna!” so triumph, victory, royal glory and joy at the coming of the Savior. Since Palm Sunday begins Holy Week, the palm also becomes an announcement and symbol of the Resurrection of Christ, his victory over death and sin. The traditional Polish palm tree is very complex and each of its elements has its own meaning:
- Willow catkins: Symbolize reborn life, vitality, immortality and life force. They are also a harbinger of spring.
- Green branches (boxwood, periwinkle, yew): Represent eternal life, hope, joy and victory.
- Dried flowers and herbs: Symbolize beauty, rebirth, and have healing and protective properties.
- Colorful ribbons and tissue paper flowers: They add charm, joy and emphasize the festive character, referring to the spring, colorful nature.
- Palm tree height: The taller the palm tree, the greater the happiness and success for the home and family.
You can make such an Easter palm yourself at home. Not only will it be original, but the process of creating it itself can be great fun.
You need a stick, tissue paper and 20 minutes to prepare an Easter palm tree
Most often, we buy it ready-made in the store, but you can actually prepare a palm for Palm Sunday yourself, for example from tissue paper. Palm trees made of tissue paper are extremely colorful, durable and provide plenty of scope for creativity. Making them is great fun for the whole family. For this task you need:
- Tissue papers in different colors,
- wooden stick,
- glue,
- Thin floristic wire,
- Threads.
How to make an Easter palm out of tissue paper?
Here are the step by step instructions:
- Take green tissue paper (or brown if you want to imitate bark) and cut it into strips about 2-3 cm wide. Start wrapping the stick in a spiral from the bottom up, with slightly overlapping layers. Glue or secure the ends of the tissue paper with tape to prevent it from unraveling. This will be the “trunk” of your palm tree.
- Cut the green tissue paper into long strips about 5-10 cm wide (depending on how wide you want the leaves).
- Fold the strip of tissue paper in half along the longer side. Then cut it with scissors from the fold side at regular intervals (every 0.5-1 cm), but do not cut it all the way – leave about 1-2 cm of the edge intact. “Fringes” will be created.
- Unroll the strip of tissue paper. Then, starting from the top of the stick, wrap the cut strips of tissue paper around the stick so that the “fringes” stick out, imitating leaves. Secure with a rubber band or thread, and then glue the ends of the tissue paper. You can make several layers of such leaves to make the palm tree more lush.
- Creating tissue paper flowers: Cut the tissue paper into a strip 3-5 cm wide and 20-30 cm long. Fold the strip in half lengthwise. Cut one edge of the folded strip into small “fringes”. Roll the strip tightly into a spiral, forming a flower. Finally, tie the base of the flower with thread or wire.
- Once you have your flowers ready, start attaching them to the top of the stick, above the green leaves.
- You can glue the flowers directly to a stick or to green leaves. If you are using floral wire, you can wrap it around the base of the flower and then wrap the wire around the stick, securing it in place.
- You can also add tissue paper “cats” – roll small pieces of white or gray tissue paper into balls and stick them to short green strips, and then these strips to the palm tree.
- Finally, tie colorful ribbons at the base of the tissue paper flowers or at the very bottom of the stick to give the palm an elegant finish.
