Paes criticizes decision and defends direct elections in RJ – 03/26/2026 – Politics

The former mayor of , (), pre-candidate for governor of the state, criticized this Thursday (26) the decision of the (Superior Electoral Court) that determined the holding of indirect elections for a buffer mandate after the resignation of ().

“DIRECTS NOW!!!! The population should have the right to choose,” said Paes on social media. “How can we have clean elections in Rio in October with this group in power?” He says he would put his own name forward as a candidate in the event of a direct election.

Rio has been in turmoil since the former governor decided to leave office shortly before the highest electoral court resumed a trial against him — which did not prevent ministers from convicting him of abuse of political and economic power in the 2022 elections and making him ineligible until 2030.

Former vice governor Thiago Pampolha left his position after an agreement to take up a seat on the Court of Auditors. The next in line of succession is Rodrigo Bacellar, removed president of the Legislative Assembly, whose mandate has just been revoked by the TSE.

The person currently occupying the Guanabara Palace, on an interim basis, is the president of the state Court of Justice, Judge Ricardo Couto de Castro. THE Sheet he said “”, but that “president of court is not prepared to be the governor of the state”.

The TSE corrected this Wednesday (25) one in which the court declared Castro’s ineligibility and ordered indirect elections to be held. The document pointed to a direct election, while the votes indicated a vote among state deputies.

“How to decide with impartiality and justice in a collegiate body in which the majority (many elected using the unveiled scheme) are part of the political group that was revoked by the TSE itself last Tuesday?”, said Paes in social media posts.

“How can we have clean elections in Rio in October with this group in power? They will prepare a new ‘CEPERJ’ and once again try to rig the elections”, continues the former mayor in reference to the res judicata by the TSE that declared Castro’s ineligibility.
